Tomato harvest 2009

This year we had many rains in June,no rain in July and 2-3 days with rainstorm in August. So my tomato plants in plot lived without watering from me. July it was bad month for the plants and 3-4 tomato plants died but with many ripen tomatoes in their stems.

Usually I can go in my plot once a month and I stay there 4-5 days but in August I was there for 12 days. Everyday I had fresh tomatoes for my lunch and dinner so I feel happy.

All my tomatoes are organic and most of them are heirloom varieties. This year I had many yellow tomatoes also and I like them all. Last year I had grew only the yellow pear tomato in my city garden and it was the first time ever that I had a yellow tomato in my hands.

I have my tomato plants in 2 different places in plot. I think I have 50 plants and 10 of them are plants from the other tomatoes. Well… for first time when I cut some stems I put them in soil and they make roots so I have new tomato plants. The new plants had green tomatoes the first days of August but they will be ripen the next weeks.

My tomato plants in city were not so lucky this year and they died almost all in July. It’s not so easy to keep a garden in city and in plot – which is far – the same time in mediterannean summer. In plot the soil can keep the water from rain – if it rains – but in city the pots and containers feel very thirsty when they are alone without me.  In Greece we used to say that you can’t keep 2 watermelon in the same armpit.

The only problem is that I had five heirloom tomato varieties of this list only in my city garden so I lost their seeds. But it’s ok I will try to grow them the next year again.

  • Lovely tomatoes! It sounds as though you’ve been lucky with the rain. We’ve had a bit of rain today, but it’s the first for two and a half months. Everything is very dry, but then that’s what the Mediterranean summer is like!

This year was strange in Greece. The spring late to come and the June was so rainy in my area. Usually the summer is very dry here also. I remember last year how difficult it was to plant 10 tomatoes in April, the soil it was so dry and tough. I wish you some rainy days (but I think you will have many of them in September)

  • When do your tomatoes usually finish? I pulled mine last week. You can still find plants in the shops. Some of those that fall bear fruit later in the year.

@adekun I pulled most of them yesterday because I wanted to sow something else. I keep 10 plants only, the tomato-plants I plant in June
