Rosemary

Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) is one aromatic Mediterranean plant that can reach one meter in height. It is self-sown evergreen plant in my country, but also cultivated in parks, gardens and in pots of balconies.

It belongs to the wider family of Lamiaceae with the lavender, the oregano, thyme, mint and marjoram. Rosemary blooms in spring and summer and the tiny blue flowers attract bees so is considered as excellent apiculture plant.

The easiest and most inexpensive way to get a rosemary plant is through propagation. Find a plant in the countryside or in your friends gardens and cut some woody branchlets. Prefer to choose branchlets without flowers.

Place branchlets in a glass of water for several days. If you notice carefully you will see that rosemary branchlets starting to make small roots. When the roots are 3-4 cm can be planted carefully into a pot or in your garden. When I say carefully, I mean that you will hold with one hand the branch into the pot with the roots hanging and with your other hand you will add soil around the plant to stabilize the roots.

As self-sown Mediterranean plant, rosemary does not need frequent watering but requires enough sunlight to grow properly. If you have rosemary in a pot on your balcony is good to protect it from cold in winter to prevent freezing. Rosemary is more sensitive when grown in pots than if they grew in a garden or countryside
