My new Maple – Acer platanoides

Acer platanoides is one of my new trees in plot. I plant it at the middle of May and I am not sure if it will grow normally because maple trees need water and in the area of plot we don’t have so much water.

So you may ask why I plant this tree. The area has many pine trees, you can see conifers everywhere. Well ok not so many pines this moment because we had a big fire 3 years before but the fire stops 600m from my plot and didn’t burn the pines next to plot.

The first tiny tomato of 2009

Ok it’s official! I just found the first baby-tomato of the year and I have a big smile in my face.

The winner tomato plant is the heirloom variety “Bloody Red Butcher” and I grow it in a big container in my balcony.

Eruca sativa seeds

I was waiting this moment many months. I just collect my first Eruca sativa (rocket or arugula) seeds from the plant I grew in my city garden. I had the Eruca sativa plant in a big flowerpot from November.

The seeds I sowed were from one Greek NGO. They have a small seed bank and they send me free some seeds. But now I must save my seeds for the next years. My plant don’t have so many seeds, they send me 3 times more seeds than the seeds I save from my plant but it’s ok, it’s my first seeds anyway.

Last night I start reading one interesting book of Suzanne Ashworth “Seed to Seed: Seed Saving and Growing Techniques for Vegetable Gardeners The heirloom seeds of immigrants” where she had wrote in the first pages about the increase of biodiversity and heirloom varieties in the United States because of immigrants.

Patty Pan Squash seedlings

My “White Bush Scallop”or just Patty Pan Squash seedlings growing without problems. To be honest I am not sure when is the right month to sow these seeds because wedon’t have this variety in my country. It’s something new for me.

Last year I was not so lucky with Patty Pan squash plants. I receive the seeds in June, I grow some plants in flowerpots, they give me many flowers the summer but no patty pans.I think I had only male flowers in my plants.
